What is Biomass?

Biomass is biological material derived from living, or recently living plant matter, such as trees or crops processed into fuel and heat. Biomass is a carbon neutral fuel, which takes carbon out of the atmosphere while it’s growing and in return turns the same amount back as it is burnt.

Managed to a sustainable basis, biomass is replenished with new growth as it is harvested. This maintains a closed carbon cycle, with no net increase in carbon dioxide levels, which contribute to global warming and climate change.

Helping the Enviroment

Using wood and wood products as a substitute to fossil fuels means that sustainably managed wood land can provide ongoing contribution to climate change. Biomass can be sourced locally from within the UK on an indefinite basis, which will support the rural economy.

Biomass is a clean and sustainable fuel source. It can supply 100% of your heating and hot water demand, which makes it a viable and preferable alternative to fossil fuel.

Cost Saving

With an eligible installation of a biomass boiler you will qualify for RHI (Renewable Heat Incentive) payments. These are quarterly cash payments for ‘Going Green’ and reducing your carbon emissions. The scheme opened on 9 April 2014 to encourage uptake of renewable heating.

Biomass Supplies

Please contact us at Thorncliffe to learn more about our expertise as one of North Wales competent biomass fuel suppliers. We will help you plan your fuel delivery method at the design stage; when buying a wood chip system, there are many fuel storage options available and we are here to help.

Fuel

– Wood is the most common type of biomass fuel, with the main type being used is wood chip.
– Wood chip is timber, which has been shredded in a chipper. It is an easy fuel for automation with a screw feed taking the chips straight from the store into the boiler.

Boilers

A biomass boiler can burn products made from a variety of sources to produce heat for domestic and industrial applications. A biomass boiler puts you back in control of your fuel source and energy bills. They are quick and easy to install, connecting directly to your existing heating system. This gives you full heating and hot water all year round, with great savings to your annual energy costs.

Chip systems are inexpensive to run, although the initial capital outlay is greater than other technologies due to the additional parts required to make the boiler fully automated.

Storage and Parts

When supplying Biomass fuel, a tipped delivery is a popular option, this is cost effective as the fuel supplier will just need to tip fuel into storage, meaning less time on site. We recommend specifying as large a bulk fuel store as possible, in order to minimise the amount of fuel deliveries per year.

Another option would be to have a ramped delivery into an underground or subterranean fuel store. Although this would initially cost more to begin with, it would be cost effective in the long run when buying wood chip fuel in bulk, as this can be easily managed.

You can trust Thorncliffe to advice on biomass fuel storage, with vast personal knowledge within the biomass industry and system.
